At the Perlmutter Cancer Center, we are dedicated to providing patients with gastrointestinal cancers, such as colorectal, liver, and stomach cancer, as well as those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with the highest standard of care and access to cutting-edge clinical trials. Being part of a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, surgeons, gastroenterologists, and other specialists ensures a comprehensive approach to patient care, where no stone is left unturned.

My career has been devoted to improving the lives of patients with pancreatic cancer. At NYU Langone, we harness innovative research from our laboratories and translate these findings into new therapies and clinical trials, which helps us make strides against even the most challenging diseases. Our focus also includes preventing cancer, particularly in high-risk individuals. As co-director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer program with Dr. Hidalgo, we are committed to early detection through novel blood and stool-based tests and exploring innovative cancer prevention avenues, such as vaccines.

A testament to the power of team science, I am honored to have received the Team Science Award from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). This recognition underscores the collective wisdom of our team at NYU Langone and the Perlmutter Cancer Center in delivering unparalleled care to our patients.

My path to medicine has deep roots, inspired by my parents—both research professors. From an early age, I envisioned a career that combined being a physician and a scientist, shifting between the bench and the bedside to make a difference in people's lives. Pathology was the perfect fit for me, offering insights into the fundamental mechanisms of diseases, which fuels much of my laboratory research.

Helping patients through one of the most vulnerable times of their lives is a commitment I hold dearly, especially in a field as challenging as pancreatic cancer. Being there as a compassionate human being, not just as a physician, allows me to guide and support not only patients but also their caregivers and families throughout their journey.

As a GI pathologist, I work within a multidisciplinary team to provide essential diagnostic insights that guide treatment decisions for patients with gastrointestinal diseases, including pancreatic cancer. With nearly a quarter-century of experience, I deliver the highest levels of professionalism and expertise at NYU Langone.

Our team is distinguished by our commitment to research and clinical trials in pancreatic cancer and related conditions. We convene in a multidisciplinary clinic setting, bringing together diverse expertise to deliver state-of-the-art care tailored to each patient. Access to our expanding portfolio of clinical trials is integral to our approach, as we focus on treating not just the disease but also addressing the comprehensive needs of each individual. This holistic understanding helps us extend survival and improve the quality of life for our patients.

Research Summary

The overarching goal of the Maitra laboratory at Perlmutter Cancer Center is to improve the survival of patients with pancreatic cancer through earlier detection, cancer interception and rational therapies. For nearly 25 years, our Laboratory has been singularly dedicated to the cause of researching pancreatic cancer, one of the most lethal cancers known to mankind, with a clear line of sight to translational advances that can improve patient outcomes in the clinic and favorably impact those at high risk of the disease. Our research has been consistently supported by the National Cancer Institute (National Institutes of Health), as well as foundations such as Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), Breakthrough Cancer, the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Through this journey, our laboratory has collaborated with many national and international colleagues, emblematic of the team science approach that we are convinced is required for success against pancreatic cancer, and further, had the great fortune of mentoring numerous exceptional trainees, augmenting the next generation of cancer researchers.
