NYU Langone Health has just announced John P. Leonard, MD, a renowned expert in lymphoma and other blood cancers, as the new director of the Center for Blood Cancers and chief of the , in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s . Dr. Leonard comes to NYU Langone from NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he served as senior associate dean for innovation and initiatives and as a professor of medicine.
“I am excited to see Dr. John Leonard join us to lead our hematology and medical oncology division and Center for Blood Cancers,” said Alec Kimmelman, MD, PhD, director of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center. “He is an outstanding leader and clinical luminary whose pioneering work in lymphoma treatment has had a transformative impact on patients around the world.”
In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Leonard brings his decades of experience treating patients with lymphoma and other blood cancers, as well as internationally recognized expertise in clinical and translational cancer research. His work primarily is directed toward development of novel therapies and improved regimens for lymphoma. He also focuses on targeted treatments and other efforts to improve understanding of blood cancers and enhance patient outcomes. In his new roles, he will facilitate and foster an environment where faculty and trainees can impact the fields of cancer and blood disorders across the institution and in the community.

The Center for Blood Cancers supports new and ongoing research efforts and provides expanded educational and clinical resources for students and faculty at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. As part of the center’s mission to enhance services for patients, the recently opened Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Center provides patients with a healthcare team and services dedicated to blood and marrow transplants and cell therapy, as well as novel research opportunities.
The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology is a major clinical arm of the Perlmutter Cancer Center. The division is composed of physicians, scientists, and educators who provide compassionate care for all patients, regardless of means, as well as state-of-the-art research and training.
In addition to these leadership roles, Dr. Leonard will also serve as the senior advisor to the dean and chief clinical officer for enterprise cancer strategy and operations, in which role he will work with other leaders at NYU Langone to help make enterprise decisions on the growth of and strategy for the cancer center and its programs.
Dr. Leonard is also being named the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the Department of Medicine and will see patients at NYU Langone Hematology Associates.

Dr. Leonard attended Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate and went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. After completing his residency in medicine at the NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he did a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Cornell and served as the chief medical resident at the NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.
He has contributed extensively to the field of lymphoma and related blood cancers through his research on innovative treatment approaches, with his work featured in numerous medical journals. He has held editorial board positions for prominent publications, including Blood and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He serves as chair of the Lymphoma Committee for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, a major multicenter cooperative group integral to the National Cancer Institute’s National Clinical Trials Network. Dr. Leonard is a past elected member of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s hematology subspecialty board and is also an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation. His leadership roles extend to having chaired the Scientific Advisory Board and current service on the board of the Lymphoma Research Foundation, as well as being a board member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s New York City chapter. In recognition of his compassionate patient care, he was honored with the Miriam G. Wallach Award for Excellence in Humanistic Medical Care by NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine in 2017.
